The Diaper Genie is a diaper disposal solution for families with young children. To prevent smells and germs, the Diaper Genie system carefully wraps each diaper in a fragrant film. The container may be emptied when it has been filled with used diapers. A “diaper sausage” is the colloquial name for the ensuing chain of diapers that have been sealed. Diaper Genie is a brand owned by Playtex Products, Inc., who purchased the Diaper Genie business in 1999 from Mondial Industries L.P. The product was first developed by British innovators (presently marketed as “Sangenic” by Mayborn in the UK).
Below, we’ve got a step-by-step guide for you to help you learn just how to open and empty your Diaper Genie. You’ll learn how to change the bags and how to make sure your diaper pail is clean and ready to go for the next round of diapers, too.

How To Empty Your Diaper Genie (*VIDEO*)
There are a few different types of Diaper Genie out there on the market, and each one operates slightly differently than the last. However, they all function in a similar way, so you can follow the steps we have put together below to help you get your bag changed and your Diaper Genie cleaned and ready to go once again. Even if yours is a different model, you should be able to adjust accordingly fairly easily. Be sure to check out our notes on the newer model as well.
How To Empty Your Diaper Genie (*Step-By-Step*)
Follow these steps to empty your Diaper Genie properly.
- On models that have a release button on the front, the first thing you need to do is press that release button. This will allow the top to unlatch from the bottom of the diaper pail, making it easier to take it apart.
- Remove the top from the bottom of the diaper pail, taking care not to let any of the dirty diapers inside spill out.
- Just above the top diaper in the bag, pinch the trash bag and twist it to seal off the diapers inside. You may also want to go ahead and tie a knot in it now before you remove the bag from the rest of the diaper pail.
- Inside most modern Diaper Genie models, there is a small cutting blade beneath a plastic box. You can slide the trash bag into this blade and use it to cut the bag from the remaining bags without the need for scissors.
****If you have one of the newer models of Diaper Genie, you can simply flip open the front latching door and reach inside to pinch the top of the bag and twist it shut. The cutter is on the front of the Diaper Genie and can be easily accessed without needing to take the whole thing apart or even turn it over.
- Dispose of the full bag of diapers.
- If you need to replace the bag cartridge as well, close the Diaper Genie and turn it on its side so that you can open the lid to the top.
- Pull the tab closure off of your bag refill and discard it. Pull up the first bag so that it is slightly sticking out of the refill container.
- To remove the old bag container, simply take it out of the pail. Replace it by just popping the new one into place and pushing the bag down through the center of the pail.
- Close the Diaper Genie and reopen the middle of this option again. Pull the clean bag through and knot it tightly shut at the bottom.
****If you have one of the newer models of Diaper Genie, you will only need to pull open the front latching door to this offer and reach inside to pull the bag through. You do not have to worry about taking the whole thing apart.
- Close the Diaper Genie once again and lock it shut. Congratulations! You have just emptied your Diaper Genie and replaced the refill bags, if needed, as well.
- If you are planning to use a regular trash bag instead of a refill bag, you will need to follow more or less the same instructions. However, when putting the bag in, you’ll need to position it so that it hangs over the side and the lid of the Diaper Genie helps to hold it in place. These diaper pails are not designed to work with regular trash bags, but they can be used with kitchen bags if you’re willing to put forth a little more effort to make them fit.
Conclusion
It may take a little practice to get the hang of emptying your Diaper Genie, so don’t be afraid to take time and run through it more than once if you have the chance. If your little one is already home and you’ve already got diapers to worry about, though, there’s no reason why you can’t just learn as you go along! Just remember to work slowly the first few times and you’ll get the hang of it soon.
Remember, too, that you should keep your Diaper Genie clean and disinfected to ensure that it’s safe for your little one and everyone else in your home to be around. You should wipe down the inside with disinfectant cloths every time you change the bag, and you should make sure to scrub it with soap and water regularly as well. Let everything dry before you put it back together to avoid the risk of mold and mildew buildup inside the container.
With a few extra steps on your bag changing routine, you can make a big difference in the overall cleanliness of the Diaper Genie product you have in your nursery. And by keeping your diaper pail clean and disinfected, you’ll help it last a long time and continue to be useful even if you have more children in the future—or if you want to pass it along to a friend or family member when your baby is no longer in diapers, too.
